Wakefield

Wakefield covers a lot of ground and has the history to match. The town includes seven villages spread across 44 square miles that border Maine to the east. Wakefield Corner sits on a hilltop where six stagecoach lines once converged on the main route between the seacoast and the White Mountains, and the buildings that went up to serve all that traffic are still standing. The Wakefield Inn has been operating since 1804. Province Lake, Balch Lake, Great East Lake and Horn Pond all span the New Hampshire and Maine state line, which makes Wakefield one of the more unusual towns in the region geographically.

THE LAKE HAS STORIES

The public library in Wakefield Village was built by the president of Columbia University and the mayor of New York City.

Seth Low was a Wakefield native who went on to become one of the most prominent figures in American public life in the late 1800s. He served as president of Columbia University, where he funded the construction of Low Memorial Library on the new Morningside Heights campus. He later became mayor of New York City. In 1902 he donated the cost of building Wakefield’s public library in honor of his mother, who died in childbirth when he was born. The building is a small-scale replica of the library he built at Columbia. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 and is still in use today.

Start with a conversation.

Whether you are exploring Wolfeboro, comparing Lakes Region towns, preparing to sell, or trying to understand the market more clearly, the first step is a calm conversation about what matters most to you.
