Brookfield
Brookfield is the smallest town in Carroll County and it is entirely at peace with that. The population sits around 755 people and the dirt roads wind through the hills past old farmhouses that have been standing since the 1700s. More than 136 miles of stone walls run through the town's 14,802 acres, marking the boundaries of farms that were cleared by hand and long since given back to the forest. Kingswood Lake sits at the heart of it, quiet and unhurried. This is the kind of place people find when they stop looking for something else.

There is a mountain in Brookfield called Tumbledown Dick.
The name is not a joke. It comes from Richard Cromwell, the son of Oliver Cromwell, who briefly ruled England after his father’s death in 1658. He lasted eight months before being forced to resign, earning himself the nickname “Tumbledown Dick” in the history books. When settlers were naming the landscape of early New Hampshire, that name stuck to a mountain on the old road between Brookfield and Wolfeboro.
A failed English ruler from the 1600s is now a hiking landmark in Carroll County.
