New Durham

New Durham is one of those Lakes Region towns where the land itself tells you something. The terrain is rocky and uneven, better suited to forest and grazing than to farming, which meant the people who settled here in the 1750s had to be resourceful from the start. Merrymeeting Lake is the centerpiece, quiet and mostly residential, the kind of lake where the water sits glassy in the morning and the loons are louder than the boat traffic. Small population, big character, and the kind of countryside that holds its value.

THE LAKE HAS STORIES

Did you know the site of New Hampshire’s largest fish hatchery used to be a gunpowder factory?

In the 1850s, the Eureka Powder Works manufactured sporting and blasting powder along Merrymeeting Road in New Durham. It operated for only a few years before shutting down. In 1946, the state opened the Powder Mill Fish Hatchery on the same property. Today it is the largest fish production facility in New Hampshire, raising landlocked Atlantic salmon and trout. It is open to the public year round and free to visit.

Same water. Same land. Completely different outcome.

Start with a conversation.

Whether you are exploring Wolfeboro, comparing Lakes Region towns, preparing to sell, or trying to understand the market more clearly, the first step is a calm conversation about what matters most to you.
